Ole Miss students have been hitting the tanning beds and booths to get a golden glow before they have to expose their bathing suit bodies next week during spring break.

Several girls have taken multiple trips to one of Oxford’s tanning salons, some even resorting to fake tans.

In attempt to speed up the tanning process, girls have taken frequent trips to the tanning bed with hopes to avoid burning during the first couple days on the beach.

“I usually get fried during the first two days in the sun, so I figured I would get that step out of the way and prepare my skin for laying out all day,” Bailey Doctor said.

A couple of Ole Miss cheerleaders have been employed by a local tanning company to sell portable spray tan kits to girls living in the dorms.

Freshman Natalie Kroneman purchased one of the “do-it yourself” portable spray tan kits in hopes to speed up her pre-spring break tanning process.

“My friends and I want to be super black come spring break, so we all pitched in to buy this easy and effective tanning package,” Natalie said.

Girls have exactly one week left to soak up the rays and get as brown as they can before they celebrate the mid-semester at spring break 2011.

With spring break right around the corner many Ole Miss students are getting their plans together for the big week.

While there are many places to spend the break, many head south to the Florida Panhandle. “I just want to lay on the beach all day with a cooler full of cold beer,” said Sophomore Luke Goodman of Meridian, Miss. “We found a cheap house that is in a great location in Destin.” Many students are running low on funds at this point in the semester, so finding a place that is fairly cheap is important to most.

All students want to get away and relax for a while, but that does not mean they have to go skiing or to the beach. Sophomore Taylor Phillips said, “I am going home and sitting on the couch all week. The only trip I will be making is to the fridge.”

Students around campus are doing all types of interesting things for the break. Many have gotten quite creative.

Perrin Crews, liberal studies major from Tupelo Miss., is going to Orlando to watch the Atlanta Braves in spring training. He said, “I decided to change things up this year since I usually just go to the beach.”

Regardless of what the student’s plans may be, I am sure there will be no shortage of excitement this break.

Spring Break

As Spring Break approaches, the days get longer and the attention span of students at Ole Miss gets shorter.

“Spring Break is my favorite time of year. I’m going to the Bahamas on a ‘booze cruise’ with all my girlfriends and we are going to party, party, party.” said Karli Valenzuela, sophomore at Ole Miss.

For decades, spring break has been about young adults descending on beach towns for sun, surf, parties, flirting, and sex. This year it is no different. As Ole Miss students count down the days till “SB ‘11”, the weather gets warmer and the gym gets even more crowded. College students eagerly try to save up their money and stock up on cold refreshments.

With gas prices rising, a good bit of students decided to stay home this year to save money and catch up on spending time with their family. Carson Eades, a sophomore, psychology major at Ole Miss decided that she wanted to go home this spring break.

“I’m not really a fan of partying and drinking, it’s not really my thing. But, I’m also a sucker for peer pressure. That’s why I’m staying home for spring break, my mom doesn’t pressure me.” Eades said.

Whether you’re spending the week on a ‘booze cruise’ or spending the week with your parents, Spring Break 2011 is highly anticipated by all students on the Ole Miss campus.

Spring Break

Many students at the University of Mississippi and other schools around the country are preparing for their spring break.

The middle of March is a joyous time for college students where they can drop their books, leave their educational worries and spend a week in frenzy before getting back to their studies. Dorms clear out and the hotels and condos on in Panama City Beach, Fla., Daytona, Fla. and Destin, Fla. fill up with college students for a week. In Oxford, Miss., the population halves as students leave the University of Mississippi and spend the week at different vacation spots across America.

Monica Woods, pharmacy major from Waterloo, Ala., will be celebrating her 21st birthday over spring break in Chicago.

“I intend to spend my spring break enjoying St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago,” Woods said. “I might enjoy a couple drinks for that entire week.”

Woods said that her and two other friends will be travelling together and staying friends’ houses all but one night through the entire week and have spent the first part of the semester saving up their money. She also said that the recent rise in gas prices have made them reconsider the plan to drive, but plane tickets at this point are too expensive.

The break is what many students look towards as the midway point in the spring semester and the last major point before the end of the year. After the break, students viewed themselves as renewed and refreshed through the end of the year and finals.

Students all over the world prepare for wherever their spring break plans take them, and this year they need to make sure they do it in style.
Much preparation goes into many people’s spring break plans.  Most people go to the beach with a group of friends.  Guys drink way too much and girls bask in the sun for too long.  If people are going to spend their week overindulging, they might as well do it looking their best.  Besides, everyone knows that the pictures taken will haunt them forever.
“When I look back at that week’s pictures, I want to feel confident that I looked my best at all times,” said Morgan Sisson, a junior psychology major. “Plus, to me, that week is the best time to show off all your new spring and summer clothes.”
Sisson says that when she prepares for her trips, planning is key.  First, she makes a list of everything she may do while on the trip.  Then, she can pick outfits accordingly.  Her favorite items for the beach trip she will take for her break include a big floppy hat to keep the sun from her face and a new Victoria Secret bathing suit.  Every year, Sisson buys a new suit for her vacation. This year she plans to incorporate pink and orange into every outfit, because those our spring’s most fashionable colors. She also likes to keep things simple and comfortable. Her packing essentials for the beach are linen pants, sundresses, and of course, the perfect beach bag to hold all of her things.
“The key is to keep things simple and classic, because vacation is about relaxation and you don’t want to look like you have tried too hard to look good,” says Sisson. “It is all about your outfit looking effortless.”
Julia Porter, a junior education major, says that her week-long trip is about keeping things simple during the day and trendy at night.  At night, Julia plans to go out and like previous years, she will step out in the latest styles.
“I start looking at magazines with all of the newest fashions to prepare for my attire,” says Porter.
People Style Watch’s March issue is where Porter looked for this year’s fashion and she found tips that helped her plan. First of all, white is a must this year.  Porter insists that white is the perfect beach color and you can accessorize it so well.  She will pair most of her outfits with gold jewelry.  She also is a big fan of the big artsy necklaces that make any neckline pop.  Her favorite outfit that she has planned so far is snakeskin pants that are grey and black paired with a sexy black top.  The top is simple, but it does show just enough skin.  She will pair this outfit with Jessica Simpson black pumps and black jewelry.  Porter knows that some people may be surprised by her pants, but she insists if they are the newest trend.
“I’m probably going to get crazy looks some nights, because, let’s face it, most people do not know or understand fashion.” Porter said. “One thing’s for sure, I know what is hot and I am not afraid to wear it.”
Boys do not really get into what looks the best.  As long as they have a bathing suit, most of them are content.  Preston Bridges, junior engineering major, says he will pack some polos and khaki shorts for nights out on the town. Other than that, he will wear the one and only bathing suit he owns all day.
“I don’t know about some people, but I am there to have a good time on the beach,” said Bridges. “After all, I look my best with as little clothing as possible on the body I have been slaving over for my spring break vacation.”
Girls and boys will find themselves packing bags to be on their way to a vacation from school and life in general.  It is a week to escape and have fun.  Each person has their own opinion of style and what matters.  Hopefully, some people will take the advice of Sisson, Porter, and Bridges and keep things classic and trendy, so that when everybody sees the new photos uploaded to Facebook, they will notice their outfits instead of their drunken poses.

Spreak Bring Craze Hits Oxford

With just days left until the mass exodus to sunny South Florida and various other vacation spots, Ole Miss students are finding it hard to think about anything other than spring break. A week from Saturday, residence halls will be closing, and the vast majority of the student population will be emptying the campus.

While plans may vary among different group, one constant can be found between everyone: no one can wait for next week to come. “I’ve been waiting since Christmas for spring break,” said freshman Taylor Parker. “If I didn’t have Mardi Gras this weekend, I don’t think I could make it.” This is the attitude shared by just about every student on campus. The thought of a week without school obligations and worries here on campus is appealing to just about anyone.

South Florida seems to be the number one destination for those seeking a party. “Destin! Destin! Destin!” screamed freshmen Caroline Cook and Erin Caballero. The Florida panhandle has always been a major gathering point for college students, and anyone who has attempted to find and open house or condo has been met with constant frustration due a lack of vacancies. “We’re packing about 27 guys into a house that sleeps 17. But we’re right on the beach, so no one will complain,” said freshman Sam Morgan.

The Turner Center has borne the vast waves of excitement for spring break. Looking to get into prime shape for the week on the beach, many students have hit the gym to get that perfect “spring break body.” Everyone’s biggest fear is to look flabby and pale from the cold winter we just went through. “I’m normally in the gym three or four times a week, and I’ve never seen this many people in here. It’s hard to get a good workout in, when the gym is packed with kids looking to get rid of their winter coat,” said freshman and gym enthusiastic McClain Forman.

Not everyone, however, is going down to a sunny beach for a week of drunken revelry and partying with scantily clad co-eds. Many students simply chose to return home for a week of rest and relaxation. According to senior business major Hunter Yancey, “I’m just going home to my own bed for a week. Everyone needs a break. I know I do. This week will be the perfect break for me before I set out to finish my final semester here in Oxford.” A week of home-cooked meals and naps in the comfort of your own bed would do wonders for any stressed out student.

Some students are worried that the weeklong hiatus will break their concentration on schoolwork. A week off of school mid-way through the semester can be potentially harmful to future work “I just got into a rhythm with school, and I’m a little worried that a everything will be lost,” said ROTC freshman Davis Coker. “I want to go party for a week, but I know that when I come back to Oxford, the will do any work is going to be killed.” Parents and teachers, no doubt, have the same concerns.

Spring break shouldn’t be a cause of worry. It’s a much needed break for all students and teachers who have been working hard this first half of the semester. Whether you’re going home going skiing, or going to the beach, spring break is supposed to be a week of fun times and relaxation. As long as you make it back to Oxford alive and ready to finish out the year, all will be good. Just remember: be safe, and we’ll see you back in Oxford on March 21.

For spring break 2011 many students will experience the challenge of being on a tighter budget, especially for student Allyson Boyd, 19 of Picayune, Miss.

“I am going on spring break to Atlantis in the Bahamas, it definitely won’t be a cheap trip, so I am trying to budget my expenditures,” Boyd said. “My plane ticket is $600 and Atlantis is not all-inclusive.”

Boyd plans to use saved up money from her graduation, birthday and some extra cash from her parents to pay for the trip.

Originally from the Gulf Coast, Boyd’s family is one of many that have suffered from the effects of the BP oil spill. Times have been hard for many residents of the Gulf Coast area, forcing many families on a budget.

While vacationing in Atlantis, Boyd plans to enjoy the sun, and make memories with friends.

Boyd says that even though the suffering economy has forced her to reevaluate how she spends, it will not hold her back from enjoying spring break 2011.
